Legal Information

Nebraska Education Code For Homeschooling
AN A TO Z RESOURCE
Not intended as legal advice. For your information only.

Exempt (Home) School Program
Parents (or guardians) may educate their child at home by electing not to meet State approval or accreditation requirements (Section 79-1601 R.R.S.). In Nebraska, “home schools” are referred to as exempt schools and are considered non-approved or non-accredited schools.

Exempt (Home) School Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) (2017/18 School Year)
By filing for and receiving exempt status, parents are electing not to have their child attend a school that meets State approval or accreditation requirements while also complying with the compulsory school attendance law.

Rules and Regulations
Rule 13 is the rules governing the procedures and standards for parents filing for an exemption. Rule 12 was repealed and combined with Rule 13. Rule 13 and a list of changes to the recently-revised Rule can be viewed at the “Rules and Regulations” link.

Rule 13
This Chapter provides rules and regulations governing the procedures for exemption of schools from state approval and accreditation requirements when such schools elect, pursuant to Section 79-1701(R.R.S.), not to meet those requirements because they would violate the sincerely held religious beliefs of the parents or legal guardians.

Parent or Guardian Affidavit to Delay Entry into an Exempt School
Parents can delay the start of homeschooling until age seven (7) by filing an affidavit with the local school district.

Nebraska Unschoolers
Unschooling can question some traditional thoughts that usually don’t get questioned in other circles. Such as learning without a curriculum, treating children with kindness, respect and dignity.

Unschooling NE
This list is a place for Nebraska unschoolers to get together and discuss unschooling ideas. An unschooled child can choose what they want to learn and do, live in freedom and find a great joy. Unschooling is living life, from watching TV or playing video games to painting, raising animals–everything!
