Mastering operational facts, such as multiplication or addition, memorizing processes or knowing axioms is no more math than brushes, paints and a canvas is art. They are essential tools for doing math, but they are not math. Math is a way of thinking; the process of analyzing information and manipulating numerical data to come up with solutions that can be proven by mathematical reasoning. With the advances in technology, the need to accurately compute numbers, although helpful in doing math quickly and accurately, is no longer paramount. Equipping our students to move with confidence in their ability to think mathematically is essential for their success in today’s world.
Math a Way of Thinking in an interactive family workshop for homeschoolers facilitated by Beth Bascom (B.S. Early Childhood Education, MEd, Homeschooler, Math teacher for homeschooled students.)
“Beth has been a God-send. Our two sons (9, 11), who use to dread math, can’t wait to go “do” math with Beth. They return home excited about what they did and learned that day.” (Homeschooling Parents)
“I’m going to the workshop because I want don’t want to shut down whenever math is mentioned. Beth has proven that not only can I learn and teach math, I can enjoy it.” (Homeschooling Mom)
