We live in a time where the world is at our fingertips. With a few clicks of the mouse, you can learn so many new things.
This makes now a great time to homeschool using online resources!
Why Use the Internet
The biggest reason to try online learning is the ease of access. Many of us have the internet at home, on our mobile phone, or use the local library for online access. With a few minutes and a search, you can get the information you need delivered straight to your computer, tablet, or phone!
There are plenty of online curriculum options just a web link away to help you teach your children and help you upgrade your homeschooling. In addition to that, there are also many other skills you can learn online that are not only great for homeschoolers but also can be useful for mom and dad too!
It is never too late to learn something new!
Five things you can learn online right now!
There is a wealth of knowledge out there. For now, I am going to focus on five topics that my children or I have learned online. Hopefully, these will inspire you to do some searching on your own to learn something new.
I have tried for years to learn how to crochet. It was something I wanted to learn, but no matter how many books I read, I just didn’t understand. Finally, I turned to the internet and had success. Crochet blogs and videos helped me make sense of the patterns and it finally clicked! Now my daughter is learning and I’m off to my next challenge, knitting!
I’m not a cook. I have never really enjoyed it and I tend to stick with my Instant Pot on most days. My kids, however, love following simple recipes and learning how to create something tasty. I wasn’t much help on showing food prep techniques past the basics so looked online and found great cooking sites to teach them!
We also really love watching the Epicurious: Basic Skills Challenge videos because they are funny and also teach us how to (and not to) do basic cooking skills.
Let’s face it, at some point something in your house is going to break or need upkeep and it isn’t always possible for you to call in an expert. The rise of DIY has lead to a plethora of how to help online.
Did you door handle fall off in your hand? Mine did…I turned to YouTube and fixed it!
Is your sink faucet leaking? Mine was and I found great info on Lowe’s how to section to help me figure out what I needed to do to make it stop!
My kids were interested in the how-to videos so now when something happens, we pull up a good DIY home improvement site and learn together! Life skills for the win!
Do you or your child want to play the guitar? Recorder? Drums? There are online resources for that! While is it good to have someone to help your child learn a new instrument face to face, there are plenty of internet options to help. My daughter was interested in learning how to read music, and sure enough, there was something for that too!
Do you know what to do for someone that is choking? Do you know how to properly dress a wound? These first aid topics are ones that you and your children can learn online! These are important safety skills for all of us to know. While young children can’t successfully perform CPR, it would be good for them to know the basics to talk an adult through it if needed! We started simple to prepare for emergencies by learning how to make a first aid kit!
These are just a few ideas to get you started on your online learning adventure. Talk to the kids about some fun topics they might be interested in and then go forth and learn!
