Learn about the importance of teaching science to your homeschoolers and get ideas for fun science to do at home.

The ability to explore problems and to come up with solutions is a necessary skill in our world. Children naturally show curiosity to learn about things, and their mindset revolves around three question words. I.e., ‘What,’ ‘Why,’ and ‘How’! This basic curiosity and evolution of science are the reasons why we as humankind have progressed from the stone age to building rockets. 

Let’s explore some reasons why it is important for your children to learn science. 


Why Is It Important To Learn Science 

Incorporating science and scientific observation skills during the early ages of children offers many benefits.

Essential Life Skill

Learning happens when kids get engaged in the process. In other words, when kids start asking questions and become involved in discussions – their understanding of the underlying concepts becomes clearer. Engaging them early on with science can create a potential opportunity to find their own discoveries. The ability to solve real problems early on improves their critical thinking skills. 

When a kid’s curiosity is awakened – they start asking questions. You can then guide your children’s questions through the scientific process to explore potential solutions for real-life problems; thus, building their problem-solving ability, an essential life skill in the modern world. 

Hands-on Learning

By and large, all the science concepts can be taught using simple activities and science projects at home. Children are natural scientists with the ability to question everything around them.  When you help them to explore those questions using hands-on learning, this will have many benefits. The ability to experience trial and error and develop creative solutions helps children excel in acquiring cognitive skills. Whenever they find something new, children would feel confident about themselves. This lays a path to build individuality and character.

Encourages Creativity

Scientific exploration helps children develop open-mindedness and critical thinking through science play and other interactive communications. Children, when engaged in problem-solving, are naturally encouraged to come up with innovative ideas and approaches. This ability to think differently is the reason why we have so much innovation around us. 

Affinity Towards Science & STEM Career

STEM careers are taking the job market by storm in this digital economy. Multiple studies prove that STEM education opens various doors for high-paying jobs/careers. Introducing science education at an early age with home STEM activities can help build a strong affinity towards those subjects. When children find love for science at an early age, they naturally build a lifelong bond with the field, which will result in exploring a career in those fields. 


How Can You Teach Science At Home?

Despite all the benefits of teaching science to kids, a recent study proved that 5 out of 10 parents do not encourage their children to participate in science projects and activities at home. Though most parents are interested in teaching science to their kids, their inability to find appropriate tools and resources blocks them from engaging their children in proper science education. If you are one of those parents, here are some super simple activities that can help you get over the missed opportunities. 

Inspire & Stimulate Curiosity

Most of the children are gifted naturally with intellectual curiosity. It is a parent’s job to protect and stimulate that. Let them ask questions about everyday things. Don’t silence them! Encourage them instead to ask more questions. Don’t be afraid to say that you don’t know certain things. Explore the unknown ideas together with the child. Assure them that it is ok to fail. Science is all about trial and error. When kids make mistakes, encourage them to learn from them. If you can protect children’s innate curiosity, that can work as a powerful catalyst to make them genuine problem solvers.

Start Early On

Are you wondering when you should start? Early! Preschool science can be fun! Beware, though, toddlers’ brains may not be ready to handle complex tasks. It is even more challenging to make them listen to what you are saying. So do not force science and don’t start introducing theoretical science concepts. Instead, focus on independent exploration when starting science projects at home. Keep building their knowledge, starting with something your child already knows. You can include various sensory play, learn about living and nonliving things, show them cause and effect (why ice melts in the sun), learn about the difference between magnetic & non-magnetic materials, building 3D structures, etc. Choose each activity so that it builds on an existing connection with a concept that you already established.


Do Science Projects At Home

Encourage as many hands-on science activities/projects at home as possible with your kids. These hands-on activities will teach children to ask questions, observe, and explore. Simple experiments like building a balloon rocket would bring out kinesthetic learning instead of directly bombarding the third law of motion to your children. The natural outcome of every investigation becomes a memorable learning experience while everyone is having fun. Getting your kids more physically and mentally engaged in learning is the goal. You can do a wide variety of fun science experiments at home with things you probably already have on hand.

Invest In A Kid-Friendly Science Learning Environment 

Creating a fun kid-friendly science learning environment can help you in teaching science at home. Provide your children with fun and educational toys and tools to help them engage with science and foster knowledge and interest in different science-related subjects. Give astronomy kits, low-cost microscopes, ant farming kits, kitchen science kits, etc. a try. However, make sure not to overwhelm them with too many gadgets.  

Look At The World Around You

Science is everywhere!  When you take your children on outdoor trips – especially to nearby parks, encourage them to explore natural habitats. Teach them to look at the details that they might otherwise overlook. 

Take them to science museums. Museums are effective places to build that interest in STEM while inspiring your kids to think scientifically. 

When you get a chance, do not hesitate to participate in local science or STEM fairs/workshops. These events take science learning to a whole new level of experimenting and applying concepts in the real world.
