It is time to talk about TECHNOLOGY! Technology is represented in the second letter of the STEM acronym and is quickly becoming a must needed area for our children to learn and grow. The computer, tablet, or phone you are reading this on right now is technology and needed someone to plan, build, and create the programs and code to make it work! While you might not be as familiar with this type of project, don’t worry, we have plenty of resources to help you and your homeschooler create a great STEM technology project.

What is a STEM technology project

A technology project involves (of course) technology. These projects, sometimes called programming projects) usually include executable programs that are created by the student using a programming language and follow the coding process.

What is the coding process?

For the Online Homeschool STEM Fair, if you want to do a technology project please follow the coding process.

What are some good stem fair technology projects for kids?

Ready to start planning your technology project? Need some ideas?

Start brainstorming some possible questions that you could test.

Here are a few examples:

  • How can I keep track of all my matchbox cars on my phone so I know what I have when I go shopping?
  • What can I create to make it easier for me to remember to do my chores?

Need more STEM technology project ideas?

I can’t think of a single subject that will be more important in the future our kids will inherit than programming. Technology systems will be everywhere they turn, and in order to customize these things, they’ll need to understand at least a little programming

Other Resources We Love

These are not our resources so clicking the links below will take you offsite, however, they are full of great STEM technology project instruction and ideas.

STEM Technology Project Books

There is room for books in technology as well! Below are some of our favorite books to help inspire your homeschoolers to start thinking about technology and programming!

Code This! Puzzles, Games, Challenges, and Computer Coding Concepts for the Problem Solver in You by Jennifer Szymanski

“Welcome to the Coder Crew, where you’re on a mission. You’ll write algorithms to find hidden treasures, decode ciphers to read secret messages, create loops to program an expedition, and more. Along the way, you’ll learn the art of figuring out how to do things in general. That’s called computer science. You’ll also learn the art of explaining something in particular. That’s called programming, or coding.”

Coding Projects in Scratch: A Step-by-Step Visual Guide to Coding Your Own Animations, Games, Simulations by Jon Woodcock

Suitable for complete beginners, this educational book for kids gives readers a solid understanding of programming. Teach them to create their own projects from scratch, preparing them for more complex programming languages like Python.”

Get Coding!: Learn HTML, CSS & JavaScript & Build a Website, App & Game by Young Rewired State

“Crack open this book and set off on several fun missions — while simultaneously learning the basics of writing code. Want to make a website from scratch? Create an app? Build a game? All the tools are here, laid out in a user-friendly format that leads kids on an imaginary quest to keep a valuable diamond safe from dangerous jewel thieves.”
