Word Play: Language Arts Activities for Homeschool

By: Courtney Newman

Word Play Language Arts is an interesting subject since it combines multiple branches of study.  For example, writing, literature, grammar, and spelling are all encompassed by the umbrella term “Language Arts.”  Certain curricula separate these studies into different subjects, while others combine them into one general study block.  Either way, this subject can sometimes seem a little dry, or it can feel wonderfully creative.  The difference usually lies in how it is presented.  As a result, we feel like the best way to explore language arts is through word games online and activities, like word scrambles!

Homeschooling can offer the best opportunities for fun learning.  With a relaxed schedule and the freedom to mix & match, homeschooling parents can swap games & crafts in place of a regular lesson and activities for worksheets.  No one likes busy work, but nearly everyone loves learning through games! It’s been shown that we learn best through enjoyment anyway.  Even if you are a budget homeschooler, there are plenty of free or inexpensive options for supplementing a Language Arts course with fun activities!

10 Free Language Arts Activities for Your Homeschool

It can be hard to find free language arts resources. My normal go-to is a Google or Pinterest search, however, the search results can be somewhat misleading.  With these ten FREE activities, we’ve removed the guesswork in searching. Whether you’re looking for online learning games, printables, crafts, or worksheet activities, we’ve found an option for you!

10 Personally Recommended Language Arts Resources

Sometimes, a great homeschooling resource means a free site with informational articles and links to sources.  Other times, it means purchasing a highly-recommended homeschool curriculum. There is an incredible number of Language Arts resources for homeschoolers, which shows how popular and important it is to study!  As budget homeschoolers, I’m naturally always looking for inexpensive or free options. However, I recognize the value in a paid curriculum or course. Here are ten resources I personally love! Some of these are paid curriculum, and others are free resources or informational websites with links to outstanding options.

In the end, the most important factor is whether a resource works for you and your family.  Language Arts as a whole offers numerous opportunities for activities and projects, thanks to the many aspects covered.  Whether your student is practicing sight words, writing a creative short story, and diagramming sentences, you can likely find a related supplemental activity.  While, yes, it is still important to officially study the dynamics and rules of Language Arts as they apply to English, adding activities to your homeschool can break down learning barriers and create more positivity associated with Language Arts!
