You have decided to homeschool, been pushed to homeschooling due to circumstances, or need ways to supplement your child’s traditional schooling.  After finding out about the homeschooling laws in your state, one of your initial questions is, “What is the best homeschool curriculum?”  You start to look at the various curriculums that are available for homeschooling and quickly realize that many, or even most, of them are based on religious teachings.

Whether or not you have religious beliefs, you feel that academics is separate from religion.  You decide that you want a strong academic curriculum that does not have a basis in any religion.  If you want to teach religion to your children, you will do so in ways outside of the core curriculum.  You need to find an appropriate non-religious curriculum for your children, and this is where we can help!

What is a Secular Curriculum?

A secular homeschool curriculum is one that does not favor the beliefs of any one religion.  This is an especially important distinction in the area of science, when such concepts as the origin of the earth can vary between science and religious beliefs.  What is the best secular homeschool curriculum?  Here is a list of some secular homeschool curriculums available to you.

Whether you are looking for an accredited secular homeschool curriculum or just a different way to look at a particular subject, you do have options.  If you are looking for a complete curriculum, check the Multi-Subject Curriculums listing.  If you are looking for just one subject, check that subject area, and any Multi-Subject Curriculums that offer that subject à la carte will be there.  Enjoy shopping!

Click the type of curriculum you are looking for below to jump to that section.

Secular Homeschool Science Curriculums

Science is a big section where secular homeschoolers can struggle to find a curriculum. Below are different secular homeschool science curriculums to help.

Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding
Grades: K-8
Format: Print
Description: “Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding (BFSU) – BFSU is for teachers, homeschoolers, and other educators to deliver a first-rate science education to K-8 students and older beginning-science learners. Vol. I (here) is for grades K-2 and older beginning-science learners. Volumes II and III are for grades 3-5, and 6-8, and older progressing science learners. BFSU provides both teaching methodologies and detailed lesson plans embracing and integrating all the major areas of science. BFSU lessons follow structured learning progressions that build knowledge and develop understanding in systematic incremental steps. BFSU lessons all center around hands-on experience and real-world observations. In turn, they draw students to exercise their minds in thinking and drawing rational conclusions from what they observe/experience. Therefore, in following BFSU, students will be guided toward conceptual understanding of crosscutting concepts and ideas of science, as well as factual knowledge, and they will develop mind skills of scientific thinking and logical reasoning in the process. Implementing BFSU requires no particular background in either science or teaching. Teachers/parents can learn along with their children and be excellent role models in doing so.”
