2018 Halloween Events for Homeschoolers by State

October has arrived! The autumn season is a time for families to enjoy the cooling temperatures, beautiful nature, and Halloween events!

Halloween History

The Halloween we know and love today evolved a lot over the years. The roots of our modern day Halloween started in the Celtic festival of Samhain. This celebration began at sunset on October 31st to November 1st. Samhain was thought to be the night that connected the human world with the spirit world. People dressed in costumes to disguise them self from spirits.  The celebration brought families together at bonfires to remember loved ones that had passed on, as well as the end of summer, and the harvest.

In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III declared November 1st as All Saints Day. This day was to celebrate all the saints that had passed on. The celebration of All Saints Day included some of the same traditions as the Celtic festival Samhain. The night before became known as All Hallows Eve which eventually evolved into the candy-filled, pumpkin carving, Halloween that we know today.
